A student from Stotfold is aiming for glory at the sixth World University Archery Championships next month.

Nicky Hunt, who is 21, has been chosen to represent the UK at the championships.

The former Fearnhill School pupil is on a three-year physiotherapy course at Coventry University which finishes this summer. She is also a sports scholar at the university and has been receiving a grant for the past couple of years.

Nicky said: "Without the assistance of the sports scholarship, I would not be able to compete at this level. The money I get as a sports scholar helps me financially so I can train, study and have access to the best sports facilities as well."

Nicky took up archery a decade ago and now even teaches others in her spare time.

She added: "I have been shooting since the age of 11 so being selected for the World University Archery Championships to compete against some of the world's best archers is fantastic. I will definitely give it my best shot!"

The world championships take place in Vinicne, Slovakia, from June 14-17.

Nicky continued: "As a minority sport, it is difficult to obtain funding and I'm appealing to the readers of The Comet for sponsorship.

"I have one full set of equipment; however, at international level, it is necessary to have two sets of equipment.

"Although the scholarship scheme has helped me greatly, it doesn't cover all the expenses of athletes.

"As I cannot buy another bow, I am borrowing a second one to take to the World University Championships which we have adapted to suit me - which is not the best scenario.

"A compound bow costs in the region of £700."
