Young Stevenage boxer Terry Holmes has lifted a Golden Gloves national title for the second successive year.

He won the under-46kgs class two title at the Knottingley Sports Centre, West Yorkshire, on Sunday.

Holmes defeated Haroon Khan (Bury ABC), the brother of top British boxing prospect Amir Khan.

He was roared on his way to the ring by a large band of supporters from Comet country and he never let his fans down.

Khan was an elusive and slippery fighter, waiting for the advancing Stevenage boxer and trying to catch him with counter punches off the back foot. Super-fit Holmes was 4-3 down going into the last round but was able to up his workrate.

One overarm right visibly shook Khan and Holmes won the bout 11-9 on a countback after a final score of 5-5.

It was his second Golden Gloves title in as many years.

Stevenage coach Terry Emberson believes Holmes should now get picked for England for the Four Nations Championships in Wales next month.

Clubmate Tyson Price, a losing finalist last year by one point, again lost by one point against Redcar boxer Rob Walker. A desperately close affair saw Walker claim a 2-1 decision.
