Men's hockey round-up

Blueharts seconds produced a fantastic performance to defeat Letchworth's first team 4-1.

In an action-packed game, Harts started strongly and despite a disputed disallowed opener, they continued to press forward with Dan Fletcher and Richard Gorley dominant in midfield.

It was Letchworth who opened the scoring against the run of play with a well-taken breakaway strike.

With Mark Russell providing a fantastic platform from the middle of the pitch, Harts launched another attack and Mark Flint crossed for Gorley to sneak in at the near post and equalise.

Tim Price grabbed the home side's second after some great teamwork down the left.

The second period began with more dominance from the men in blue and after Devon Woolley found Mark Russell in space it was his pinpoint ball that found Phil Britton in space to drill home.

Captain James Bull and his resilient defence refused to let Letchworth pass and it was left to Britton to seal the game with his second and Harts' fourth after great work by Price.

Teenager Matt Hicks deserved his man of the match award.

A weakened Blueharts first team travelled to league strugglers Bishop's Stortford and produced their worst performance of 2006, going down 4-1.

Will Pugh played well between the posts and Ashley Hammond scored a great individual goal, rounding three players and the goalie.

Letchworth seconds drew 3-3 with Vauxhall (Ian Heywood two and Nick Cole).

The thirds crashed 4-0 to Blueharts 4ths, the fourths lost 2-1 to MBDA but the fifths did beat Welwyn GC 1-0 thanks to a Gavin Bidgood strike. The sixths were thrashed 8-0 at Winchmore Hill and Enfield 5ths.

It should be an interesting end to the season for Stevenage.

They now need one point to secure league safety following their 4-2 win over Maldon and Little Baddow.

But the side are also just two points off an automatic promotion spot in a close division.

Maldon took a shock lead with a well-taken penalty corner inside two minutes.

Stevenage were on level terms within a minute as Mike Oliver fired home his first of the afternoon.

Then Jon Oliver crossed for Ollie Holt to fire home a second.

Mike Oliver had numerous chances throughout the half and eventually grabbed his second after a good pass from skipper Danny Blackburn.

A rare Maldon attack saw them halve the deficit late in the half.

In the early stages of the second half, Mike Oliver hit the post and missed some good chances to increase their lead. Brother Jon also went close with a effort that just went wide.

Mike Oliver finally got his hat-trick and Stevenage's fourth to settle the match with a quality individual goal.

A scratch second team went down 2-0 at in-form Rickmansworth, both from penalty strokes, while the thirds earned a point against Welwyn GC 2nds.

Ian Brown scored twice as the fourths shared four goals with Blueharts 5ths.

Seb Rose also got two as the fifths won 2-1 against West Herts 6ths.

The sixths lost 4-0 at Southgate Adelaide 4ths but the game was notable for another reason.

In their debut team, the team had the distinction of playing the club's last East League game on grass. All games must be on artificial pitches from next season.

MBDA were excellent in a terrific 2-1 win over higher-placed Letchworth 4ths.

After a dour first half, MBDA went ahead from a short corner as Nigel Bollig put the ball past the keeper.

MBDA converted another short corner almost immediately, this time with Paul Lawman scoring.

Letchworth pressure then led to a successful short corner but MBDA withstood more late attacking to earn the points.
