The club also picked up individual honours in both male and female competitions beating all local specialist running clubs in the process and finishing second only to Welwyn-based Garden City Runners.

Steve Harrison secured second place overall with a second on the day after a dramatic sprint finish.

Vets Lesley Dutton and Steve Chalk both won their classes on the day to take top honours in the series veteran FV45 and MV50 categories respectively.

In the team competitions, the club was also second in the female vets competition and a solid third in all the others to provide the second place overall when combined.

Women's times (3.1miles): Sam Tophill 26:42, Lesley Dutton 27:06, Jackie Perry 27:28, Penny Wylie 28:45, Helen Shulver 29:58, Ellie Burton 32:01, Sarah Bryce 34:26.

Dave Farthing also completed the Berkhamsted Half Marathon in 1-48:48.

And Michael Summers started his 2006 cycle road racing campaign with a finish in the pack for 25th at the Eastern Road Race League 110k Crest CC Spring Road Race.

Fifteen members of Fairlands Valley Spartans were also at Digswell.

The Spartans were surprised by the arrival of Cameron and Mel Boyd from their skiing holiday in France - just three minutes before the start of the race!

Cameron then ran an excellent race, finishing first Spartan and improving eight places from the league match at Royston just two weeks earlier.

Men's times: Cameron Boyd 43:03, Mark Collins 43:22, Phil Eaton 44:39, Paul Maguire 45:38, Graham Preston 45:47, David Clarke 50:41, Ron Church 52:07, Mark Freeman 53:00, Anthony White 53:30.

In the ladies' race, Alison Wood finished strongly for an excellent eighth place and the in-form Peta Wilson improved nine places from Royston to 20th.

Six Spartans made their way to the Chiltern Hills near Wycombe to take part in the bi-annual Wendover off-road marathon. Mike Newbitt was the first Spartan finisher in 5-10:06.

Pauline Hardy completed the eight-mile option in 2-43:45.

A Spartan trio were in historic Wymondham, Norfolk, for a 20-mile race round some quiet lanes through some attractive villages.

Declan Clynes finished with a superb time of 2-11:27, Graham Blackburn was exactly six minutes behind in 2-17:27 with Jim Brown following on in 2-25:30.

Gary Mulhern achieved a new personal best of 1-42:56 at the hilly Berkhamsted Half Marathon on Sunday morning.

Roger Biggs continued his amazing run of form on Sunday by running another best time since 1999 for the fifth week in a row!

This time he was at the Little Rock Marathon which he ran in 3-33:53. This means he has now run 34 marathons in the States.\

Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas, sitting on the Arkansas River.
