Saturday football round-up

ONLY 77 fans turned up to see Arlesey Town win 1-0 at home to Waltham Forest.

Those who stayed away did not miss too much apart from the Blues halting their decline in home form. Paul Bloss scored the only goal and was awarded the man of the match award.

There was little goalmouth activity in the early stages. A quick break by Waltham on 39 minutes almost caught Arlesey napping but Michael Cox smartly headed the ball behind for a corner.

In response, Lee Tekell's free-kick from the left was centred again from the right and Tom Hobbs' shot forced keeper Charlie Hasler to dive low to his right to gather.

Waltham went close on the restart when Orlinishe's shot across the goal came back off the post.

After this scare Arlesey started to be more dominant and were the better side for the remainder of the match.

Tekell's free-kick from outside the area saw Hasler push the ball round for a corner. This was cleared as far as Hobbs whose first-time shot was stopped by the keeper who knew little about it to go over for another corner.

Another Tekell free-kick bounced across the face of the goal and only needed the slightest of touches to have opened the scoring.

The Blues grabbed the decisive goal on 74 minutes when Ozie Foster's cross saw Bloss ghost in from the left to send an awesome header into the far corner.

Waltham pressed for an equaliser but Dave Hatchett and Cox remained solid while keeper Carle Tasker was only called into some routine duties.

Blues: Tasker, Foster, Bloss, Hatchett, Hay, Cox, Hobbs (Nicholl), Gregson, Williams, McKenzie, Tekell.

Stotfold felt unfortunate to come away from Desborough with a 2-0 defeat.

They enjoyed a good first half and defended well with nothing really troubling keeper Nigel Blower.

Jay Thomas was denied early on by the keeper while Jermaine Daley's drive was also saved by Paul Beresford. The keeper also thwarted Dean Chapman in the ensuing action.

There were more chances on the restart as Ryan Frater's good strike after a corner was cleared off the line by a defender and then Junior George's dipping header was tipped over the bar.

Desborough scored twice on 65 and 85 minutes to claim the points.

The opening goal saw Michael Byrne beat Lance Gentle-King to the ball and chip over Blower.

The game was killed when a weak back pass from Daley was intercepted by Tom Mills whose shot was well blocked by Blower. But the ball ran to Byrne who shot under Gentle-King sliding in and Blower regaining his position.

Rokermen: Blower, McElroy (Grant 75), Chapman, Frater, Gentle-King, Beckett, Benton, Daley (Brown 89), Thomas, George, Harrington.

Langford went down 3-1 at home to the league leaders Oxford City, Ray Spence scoring a second-half hat-trick. Robert Groves had made it 2-1 from the penalty spot following a handball.

Arlesey Athletic earned a point at New Bradwell St Peter thanks to a late equaliser from Dave Kiddie.
