England stars fell like nine pins to Riverain Indoor Bowls Club's Tony Webb at a recent regional tournament.

Webb, the Herts singles champion for 2005-6, was the winner of the Eastern Counties Championships at Chesterton IBC.

He was drawn against Norfolk's John Ottaway, an England international, in the semi-final. The match was close with the lead altering all the time but Webb came out on top 21-17.

In the final, he met another England international, John Rednall from Suffolk.

Webb stormed off like a man who could not wait to go home and he was leading 17-3 after 14 ends.

Rednall pulled a few shots back, then Webb got a two to leave him just needing two shots to win.

But Rednall pulled back and won the next five ends to make the score 19-13.

On the next end, as had been the case throughout the match, Rednall gave the jack to Webb, who played a long jack.

Webb put his first and second bowls almost on the jack and this forced Rednall to try and fire the bowls off, which he failed to do.

This left Webb with the two shots he needed to win.

Herts also had a representative in the Championship Four finals of Glen Wilson, Jon Head, Paul Murray and Martin Coles against a team from Cambridgeshire.

Herts pulled away from the start and were too strong for the opposition and eventually won the match 22-10 with Cambridgeshire conceding on the 19th end.
