A teenager from Letchworth GC has made his mark at golf little more than a year after taking up the sport.

Pravin Liddar, a 16-year-old, has become junior champion at Wyboston Lakes Golf Club.

He only played his first round of golf in June last year, inspired by watching Michael Campbell win the US Open and Tiger Woods the British Open soon after.

Coached by Martyn Peacock at Wyboston Lakes, Pravin has been receiving tuition about once a fortnight for the last eight months.

He only started playing in competitions in August 2005 with a handicap of 34, getting down to 24 by January.

Pravin currently plays off five and in the recent championship, he shot 69 in the morning round (-1 gross) and 77 (+7 gross) to finish six over after both rounds.

Pravin won by 10 strokes and this is the first time he has broken par in his life.

He is ranked number two in the gross order of merit and number one net for the men's section at Wyboston Lakes and number one for the junior order of merit.

Pravin won numerous gold medals in the men's and junior competitions during the year.

The Fearnhill School pupil has recently started his A-levels.

With the ultimate aim of becoming a professional golfer in mind, Pravin was delighted to catch a few words with Vijay Singh at the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth last week.

He also watched his hero Tiger Woods for a few holes and a session on the driving range.
