A local darts thrower picked up the biggest prize of his career when he lifted the British Open singles trophy live on television.

Mick Reed, a 39-year-old who plays his Super League darts at Arlesey Town, produced the best darts of his life to romp to victory in the tournament in Bridlington, Humberside, defeating Mark Barilli in the final.

The field included such illustrious names as Mervyn King, Co Stompe and Darryl Fitton, who Reed defeated in the semi-finals.

Beds county player Reed, who lives in Wyton near Huntingdon, said: "It was one of those days when everything seemed to go right. I was hitting some excellent out shots and it's definitely the best win of my career.

"I actually felt more nervous going into my semi-final against Darryl Fitton but I played superb darts to get through."

The British Eurosport cameras were on hand to capture Reed's triumph which saw him hit four 100-plus finishes and clinch the title with an 84 checkout.

Reed dreams of turning professional but is in need of a sponsor to enable him to travel abroad to tournaments.

He spends much of his time at home with his wife, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, and finds it difficult to raise sufficient funds to pay for travelling and accommodation expenses.

The champion continued: "I was only able to play in this event because a good friend of mine funded my hotel and entry. Hopefully this televised win will show potential sponsors the sort of exposure I can offer them."

His next big challenge is to qualify for next month's Lakeside World Darts Championships.

He added: "I qualified in 2004 and it was a fantastic experience, so hopefully I can carry on from my win at the British Open and qualify again."
