The two Biggleswade teams went goal crazy in cup competitions on Tuesday night.

Biggleswade United won 8-2 at Kershaw League Premier Division Somersham in the first round of the Hunts Premier Cup. In difficult, blustery conditions, United made hard work of the first 45 minutes despite going three goals up in the first half hour.

Jack Weeden gave United the lead in the fourth minute tapping the ball in to an empty net after good work from Ross Kane and Robbie O'Dell split the defence wide apart.

Twenty minutes later, Weeden grabbed his second latching on to a headed pass from Marc Holmes. And in the 31st minute, Wayne Goldsmith scored his first of four goals stabbing home from close range through a crowded six-yard area.

The scoreline flattered the SML Premier Division side as their opponents caused several problems. Taking advantage of the worst of the swirling wind, the young Somersham side had United under pressure for much of the half and grabbed a well-deserved goal in the 38th minute from Jamie Donald.

In contrast to the first half, United completely dominated the second period and battered the hapless Somersham defence.

When Martin Russell slammed home United's fourth in the 61st minute it allowed them to settle. For the remaining half hour, they played stylish, controlled football with four more goals scored at regular intervals.

Wing-back Jody Johnson scored his first of the season with a strike from the halfway line that caught a passing gale-force wind.

And the best of the night came from man of the match Goldsmith who scored a blistering hat-trick in the space of 15 minutes.

In the final seconds, Somersham's Declan Bellchamber pulled a goal back with a powerful header from a corner.

United now have home advantage in the quarter-final when they will meet St Neots Town, victors over Stotfold this week.

Biggleswade Town were also emphatic winners on the same night, winning 7-1 at Sun Postal Sports in the South Midlands Floodlight Cup. Town crashed out of the SML Challenge Trophy in the third round on Saturday, losing 2-0 at Aston Clinton.

Potton United visit SML Premier Division high-flyers Leverstock Green in the third round of the FA Vase this Saturday.

The Royals were held to a goalless draw at struggling Long Buckby on Saturday.
