IMPROVE your tennis or increase your fitness - Letchworth Tennis Club is the place to go.

Another impressive month has seen the club grow both on and off the court.

* The mini tennis players at Letchworth are busy competing every weekend whether it is at red, orange or green level, both at the club and elsewhere.

The weekly club Matchplays are proving popular, giving the players an excellent opportunity to compete against other children they might not normally meet.

In the Beds League, the club has entered two teams at both green and orange level, as well as one red team. So far, Letchworth have beaten teams from Luton and Riverside.

In the Herts League, the matches come thick and fast after Christmas at red level.

At the moment, however, many of the better players are competing in the team Red Grand Prix and the individual Green Grand Prix.

This latter competition is a series of events taking place over the year around the county, where players gain points for competing as well as winning, with a view to reaching the Masters Final in August.

The Orange Grand Prix will start after Christmas.

It was also great to see 15 children competing in the Orange Cluster Matchplay held recently at the club.

Robert Lankester was the winner, while Sam Tomlinson came a close runner-up.

* Their under-16 boys have been crowned county champions.

Letchworth won this year's under-16 Hertfordshire Junior League, beating Broxbourne 6-0 in the final last month.

The team was captained by Scott Lawrence, with Gurjinkder Khera, Nirinder Singh, Alex Mansfield and Romil Shah also representing the team.

Letchworth's boys' under-15 team also recently reached the final of the Herts Knockout Cup at Queenswood.

Led by new recruit Romil Shah, the team was leading in all the matches in the final against Barnet but their opponents recovered strongly to win three tight matches to claim victory.

Davis Nicholson, Calum Parker and Alex Mansfield made up the Letchworth team.

* The new gym at Letchworth now runs fitness sessions for more than 100 youngsters each week.

Three schools - Highfield, St Francis and St Christopher - all have groups of pupils taking part in gym, yoga, pilates and tennis sessions during the week.

The club is encouraged by the level of junior activity in the new fitness facility and is keen to pursue more club-school links for tennis and fitness.

Hertfordshire Life have teamed up with Letchworth Tennis Club and Top 2 Toe personal training to offer three lucky people a complete body makeover.

The three readers were chosen out of several hundred applicants.

Their prize consists of personal training, tennis coaching, and therapy sessions.

At the end of the three-month programme, each winner will take part in a fashion show to demonstrate their progress and achievements.
