FVS TRI's top veteran triathlete Ian Mackerness won his category at the Cambridge Olympic Triathlon.

He was also third overall in the open event for the 1500m lake swim, 40k bike and 10k off road run.

It took place in terrible weather conditions which made the bike and run sections most treacherous. The weather was so bad that half the field failed to start the event!

With an overall time of 2-08:54 reflecting the conditions, Ian was only eighth fastest after the swim but with the second fastest bike leg on the day secured third overall and the top veteran position.

Total times: Ian Mackerness 2-08:54, Ed Manson 2-52:02.

Jane Chappell competed in the Thames Turbo Aquathlon on Saturday.

She was second female and 10th overall in a time of 29:18.

The race was a 426m swim in Hampton open air pool followed immediately with a 5k cross-country run in Bushy Park.

Top FVS TRI cyclist Michael Summers competed twice in four days for the second week in succession and earned points in both events.

Michael secured a ninth place finishing in the bunch in the one hour plus five laps 30-mile event MKCA Abbeygate Summer Series circuit race at the MK Bowl last Thursday.

He also competed in the 101k Neil Gardener Memorial Race based around Old Warden on Sunday.

In the awful weather conditions over half of the field retired and Michael finished in the bunch for 15th.

Ten Fairlands Valley Spartans were at Sunday's Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Multi-Terrain Marathon.

It features five rivers, four hills, three large country estates, two castles and one cathedral!

Although over a distance at around 45k, weather and ground conditions meant times were unusually fast for this type of event.

Times: Jerry McCabe 4-42:30, Mike Newbitt 4-45:48, Roger Biggs 4-49:25, Sharon Crowley 5-02:02, Chris Leigh 5-02:02, Robert Hardy 5-04:09, Julie Goodwin 5-04:09, Paul Holgate 5-06:49, Dave Carter 7-04:43, Pauline Hardy 3-02:28 (20k event).

Two Spartans made the trip to Cranfield University for the popular five-mile event on a Friday evening perfect for running.

Roger Biggs returned to form with his best ever age graded result and best actual time since 1999 (34:50). Jim Brown was also in fine form (32:58).

Biggs also made the long trip to Hartington in the Peak District the weekend before for the Dovedale Dipper Off Road Marathon.

His time was 6-05:04 in probably the most scenic marathon of its type in the UK which features 1200m of climb!

An eight-year-old North Herts Road Runners club record was broken at Cranfield, Bedford, as super veteran Derek Myall bettered the previous five-mile time for a Vet 60.

He recorded a time of 35:11, knocking four seconds off the previous best time set back in 1998.

Seven Squirrels took part in the Cranfield five-mile race with John Franklin leading home the team in 20th place in 30:31 followed by Richard Harbon (31:13), Martyn Annetts (33:29), Russell Smyth (34:22), Derek Myall, Jo Harbon (38:56) and Ian Sutcliffe (39:35).
