It was a much better weekend for Letchworth with the first XI breaking their sequence of draws with a win, albeit over the bottom side Northwood.

The start was delayed by nearly half an hour at Whitethorn Lane on Saturday as Northwood were delayed by an accident on the A1(M).

When they arrived, they won the toss and batted, but they were soon in trouble against Ed Morse and Andy Newland with wickets falling regularly.

Only Toby Cameron (60) looked confident and once Richard Jerome entered the attack, he soon had him leg before before finishing off the tail with another four-wicket haul. Morse finished with three and Newland two wickets as Northwood were bowled out for 166 off 44.2 overs.

Letchworth made a stuttering start against a surprisingly good bowling attack and lost openers Colin Letford and John Hilliard cheaply.

Richard Walsh and Steve March steadied the innings and took the score to 93-2 before March was leg before and when Ben Wallis soon followed, Letchworth were 96-4.

Dave Albon then came in and immediately took the attack to the bowlers and with Walsh in fine form at the other end, the pair comfortably knocked off the runs in a stand of 72.

Letchworth finished on 168-4 off 48.4 overs with Walsh making an excellent 77no and Albon 28no.

The seconds lost by three wickets to Stevenage 2nds in a local derby at Fairfield Park (see separate story).

The third XI visited top of the table Old Albanians 2nds and nearly pulled off a surprise victory. Chris Collison hit 86 out of Letchworth's total of 184 and then evergreen Herts over-60s star Colin Croucher took 4-27 off 13 overs as Albanians finished just short on 181-8.

The fourth XI visited Abbots Langley 3rds and bowled them out for 148 with Andy Catherell taking 3-23 and Craig Doran 3-39.

Letchworth made short work of the target reaching 151-2 off 31 overs led by Mike Fernando (60no), Matt Heath (47) and skipper Colin Chatfield (29no).

Two young players made their maiden senior hundreds for other league teams over the weekend.

The fifth XI visited promotion rivals Hatfield Crusaders 2nds and had the better of the draw, taking 18 points to give themselves a good chance of promotion.

Seventeen-year-old Phil Davies led the way with his maiden century (100no) and shared in a big stand for the eighth wicket with Andy Bailes (53) as Letchworth reached 240-8. Hatfield's reply never really got going and they finished on 140-8.

P On Sunday, in the Chess Valley League at Whitethorn Lane, visitors Holtwhites Trinibis reached 197-6 off their 45 overs.

Sixteen-year-old Sam Booth made short work of this as he reached his maiden century.

He finished unbeaten on 113 and with in-form Darren Curry making 49, they cruised to victory by seven wickets with several overs to spare.
