A DEVASTATING spell of bowling from Martin Whinnett gave Biggleswade victory on Sunday when they entertained Sharnbrook in the Beds Premier League.

Sharnbrook won the toss and elected to field and were soon to regret their decision as Whinnett ripped the top order to shreds.

Three wickets in four balls in Whinnett's second over reduced Sharnbrook to 4-3 and sent their middle order scurrying off to get their pads on.

Whinnett took his fourth wicket in the seventh over and his fifth in the 13th over.

The top five Sharnbrook batsmen all falling to Whinnett. With Twigg picking up a solitary wicket from his six over spell, Sharnbrook were clearly struggling at 54-6 in the 13th over.

There then followed a partnership of 49 between county player Ben Harding and Dilleigh before shambolic running saw Dilleigh ran out by Adam Giddings.

Harding continued to swing the bat in desperation before finally holing out to Whinnett in the deep off the bowling of Jay Szwajbak for 62 off 55 balls.

A further 28 runs were added before Biggleswade closed out the innings and Sharnbrook were bowled out for 156 in the 32nd over.

In reply, Biggleswade got off to a poor start, losing skipper Kevin Wright in the fourth over.

Fellow opener James Peacock was out in the eleventh over for just 10 runs and Biggleswade were very much on the back foot.

This brought Jimmy Hart and Jay Szwajbak together and the pair steadily built a match winning partnership of 116 in 16 overs.

Hart was out for a brilliant 50 off 51 balls and new man in Twigg fell for eight before Szwajbak finished off the run chase. Szwajbak ended on 68 not out from 74 balls, a great way to celebrate his 18th birthday.

Biggleswade are fifth in the league, just one point behind local rivals Ickwell.

Next weekend they entertain Luton Town & Indians at Fairfield.
