Neil McLellan, the Stevenage and North Herts javelin thrower, won a bronze medal at this year's AAAs in Manchester on Sunday.

His first round throw of 71.19m saw him only just miss out on a silver medal by a metre.

The event was won by Olympian Nick Neiland and former junior world medallist David Parker was second.

It continues McLellan's fine season so far with the AAAs medal his third major success this summer, following his Southern and Eastern gold medals.

The girls and women from Stevenage and North Herts finished in fourth place in their fourth Southern League meeting at a hot and sunny Bedford.

The senior women pole vaulters were the big points winners, with both Louise Shortland (3.30m) and Beth Harris (2.50m) winning their respective events.

The only other first place came from Chloe Vernon-Hamilton in the under-15 girls' 1500m event, clocking a personal best of 5:10.5.

Other personal bests came from Amy Pring (girls' 1500m, 5:17.9), Chloe again (girls' high jump, 1.40m), Anne Rees (girls' shot, 8.50m), Frances Gross (girls' discus, 24.42m), Becky Newstead (women's 400m hurdles, 85.6) and Loren Scanes (women's discus 19.50m).

Good performances were posted by newcomers to various events - Becky Newstead (3000m, 12:11.0), Helen Bailey (3000m, 12:57.7) Camilla Chilvers (300m hurdles, 56.2) and Sam MacCormick (400m, 65.1).

New member Ellie Day had a busy afternoon in the B strings of the 100m, 200m and the 100m hurdles.

The other senior team members were Shelley McLellan (shot, discus and javelin), Helene McLellan (shot and javelin), Sandra Reed, Lauren Cunningham, Sara Bailey, Wendy Meadows-Smith, Jeannette Pybus and Gemma Badrick.

The other under-15 girls were Ashleigh Clarke, Natalie Wilcox, Julia White, Hannah Sweetman, Bethan Scanes and Hollie Crease.
