Canaries officials were delighted at a bumper crowd of 912 for their first pre-season friendly of the new campaign.

Luton Town brought their first team squad to Top Field on Monday night, along with the bulk of the crowd, and proceeded to put on a good show.

Darren Salton's men, just a week into their pre-season training programme, were outclassed by the Hatters but the Hitchin manager was pleased with his players.

Hitchin fielded 21 players on the night - one less than Luton - and included new signings Paul Taylor in goal and old favourite Carl Williams in midfield.

In the second period, former players Adam Parker and Dean Brennan also took the field.

Luton, who also play at Stevenage Boro this Saturday, raced into a three-goal lead, starting with a second minute penalty from Kevin Nicholls.

In the 23rd minute, David Bell increased Luton's lead and seven minutes from the break, an impressive goal by Rowan Vine put Mike Newell's team three ahead.

Four minutes from time, Warren Feeney netted Luton's fourth.

Hitchin's players gave a good account of themselves and there was praise for defenders Stuart Hammonds, midfielder Dave Deeney and the tireless Williams.

The Canaries were at home to Paul Fairclough's Barnet last night (Wednesday) and travel to Dunstable on Tuesday night.
