Marriotts Gym Club's rising star Mollie Smith came away with a haul of medals at the Scottish National Championships over the weekend.

It was a superb performance in her first Scottish championship with Mollie eligible to compete at the Bells Leisure Centre in Perth as her mother was born in the country.

The championships are for men and women in different age groups.

The women compete in senior (age 16 plus), junior (14/15) or espoir (12/13) age groups, with the Saturday competition being an overall four piece competition where the scores on floor, vault, bars and beam are combined to give an overall score.

It also acted as a qualifier for the apparatus championship with the top six gymnasts on each piece of apparatus going through to the apparatus championship on Sunday.

The 12-year-old was was competing in the espoir age group.

In the overall competition on Saturday, Mollie put in a string of consistent performances on all four pieces of apparatus, taking the overall silver medal.

In addition, she was one of only two gymnasts who qualified for all four apparatus finals.

On Sunday in the apparatus finals she again excelled, taking silver on vault and beam as well as bronze on bars. She finished in fourth place on floor.

Mollie is coached by husband and wife team Derek Trotter and Svetlana Lebiadzinskaya (shown right with Mollie) and the pair were both delighted with the performance.

Derek said: "This was well above our expectations and well worth the 800-mile round trip to compete.

"Mollie recently spent a week at an elite training camp at one of Russia's top clubs in Moscow.

"This helped her to fine tune her moves for the competition as well as to make some small changes to her routines to meet the requirements of the new judging code.

"This was a very hard weekend for Mollie and the first time that she has had to compete on two consecutive days. Everyone is very proud of what she has achieved this weekend.
