Sixty youngsters from primary schools in the town took part in the Stevenage Pop Lacrosse Festival.

The festival was hosted at Marriotts Sports College and organised in partnership with Hitchin Lacrosse Club, with young leaders from Marriotts giving a helping hand as team managers for the teams which took part.

Jill Eaton, partnership development manager for the Stevenage School Sports Co-ordinator Partnership, said: "It was a glorious day and the new skills of the game were quickly picked up by the players."

The winning team was Codicote who beat last year's winners Roebuck in the final.

They will now go through to the regional festival at the Herts Sports Village in Hatfield.

* A dozen Stevenage schools have achieved success in sports participation.

Ten primary and two secondary schools in the town have attained government recognition for their commitment to school sport.

The Activemark and Sportsmark accreditation shows that a school is delivering at least two hours of PE and school sport a week on their curriculum. It also shows an involvement in sports days and competition for their youngsters.

Only schools who were in the first phase of the school sports co-ordinator partnership were submitted for this award and next year all schools will be involved.

Jill Eaton added: "This is a great achievement for the schools involved, showing how they value PE and school sport.

"There are many other schools who also have a great commitment to this valuable area and hopefully they will be recognised next year."

Schools receiving the award were Almond Hill, Shephalbury Park (Burydale/Shephall Green Infants), Fairlands, Featherstone Wood, Knebworth, The Leys, Longmeadow, Trotts Hill, Woolenwick Junior, The Barnwell School and Marriotts Sports College.

* Students from Marriotts and Lonsdale have been working on a dance piece over the last six weeks, linked through the Essex and Herts dance initiative led by Carrie Washington.

Marriotts students from Year 10 worked closely with the Lonsdale students to create a dance that fully explored understanding movement of the body.
