Local youngsters dominated the final stages of the Letchworth Indoor Junior Open.

Josh Sapwell of Beds retained the boys' 12 and under title, producing a masterful final display to beat Herts number one Lewis Andrews 6-2, 6-0 (pictured top left).

The one-sided scoreline was scant reward for Andrews who had played superbly throughout the week.

Sapwell trains at the Letchworth club under the New Breed programme.

Annabel Rice of Welwyn Garden City outlasted Kitty Doherty of Codicote in a marathon baseline battle in the girls' 12 and under final (left)

Rice had displayed great tenacity throughout the event.

Letchworth players Amy Draper and Katie Harbon both reached the semi-finals in their first open tournament.

Twins Charlotte and Ashleigh Cattle from Welwyn Garden City justified their top seedings to reach the girls' 14 and under final.

They battled for three hours before Charlotte triumphed 11-9 in the third set tie-breaker after Ashleigh had failed to convert a match point.

Letchworth's New Breed player Bea Kight reached the semi-final.

Watford's Ed Beak, trained by Letchworth coach Steve Shea, displayed great tactical acumen to battle back manfully from losing the first set 6-0 to overcome Aneil Persad from Middlesex in a see-saw boys' 14 and under final (left)

Letchworth's Davis Nicholson demonstrated his continued improvement by reaching the semis where he lost in straight sets to Beak.

The club's junior teams will battle it out in the county group stages of the National Junior Club League over the next three months.

A couple of the club's teams have a realistic prospect of qualifying for the regional stages if they can overcome teams from the high performance centres at Welwyn's Gosling Tennis Centre and St Albans' Batchwood Tennis Centre.

P Letchworth's mini tennis programme continues to thrive with the majority of the 21 weekly courses full plus a growing waiting list.

Many of the club's team players are playing at least three times a week, and the benefits of this are showing with good results in the varied competitions the club enters.

The weekly club nights on Mondays and Fridays from 4-5pm in term time are open to non-members and cost just £3.

And the Saturday matchplays are open to anyone and cost £5. They offer a good chance to play competitive tennis against different people.

Please call Maddy Walker on 01462 675444 for more details of these events.

Results from the recent cluster matchplays held at the club are: Red event winner James Smith, runner-up David Latter; Orange event winner Sam Tomlinson, runner-up Joe Riant; Green girls' event winner Jasmine de Ste Croix; Green boys' event winner Toby Huffer.
