The Comet Stevenage Sunday Football League

Sunday saw another virtual washout on council pitches meaning the KLM Challenge Cup games, among others, will now be played at a later date.

Persistent rain had waterlogged many of them, and despite the frustrations of many players, resting the pitches is a good idea in the long run.

Thankfully, the borough council agreed to help the league so as not to put the county cup back still further and a game went ahead at King George V Playing Fields.

Unfortunately, despite plenty of pressure, FC Rising Sun were beaten by two late goals by AFC Cheshunt.

The opener was flicked home after a cross was headed on, before the decider came when the striker beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Just Newcotech and Probuild now remain in the last 16 of the Herts Sunday Intermediate Cup on February 11.

In the Premier Division, Ricky Case put Nirankari Sports Sabha in front after 20 minutes at their Norton Road venue, formerly the home of Baldock Town FC.

After having his 46th birthday last Friday, manager Mick Vooght was forced to put the boots on for a 10-man Hermit of Redcoats who gained an extra man just before the break to bring them up to their full quota.

After a dogged display, Craig Gilbert stunned the champions by heading the equaliser past Bobby Dhillon after Mick's son, John, had a shot saved.

As a result, Bottles stay top, and face second-placed Nirankari this Sunday at Meadway Park.

In Division Two, Old Social joined FC Rising Sun on points at the top, although they have played five games more and have an inferior goal difference.

Martin Matthews (two), Stuart Archer and Dave Stroomer were on target against Newcotech at The Thomas Alleyne School. Jason Drackford and Lee McCarthy each netted their first goal of the season in reply.

Weather permitting, this Sunday will see many of the divisional cup quarter-final ties.
