Stevenage Town hosted a festival of rugby for local primary schools during Friday's spring sunshine.

There were 17 teams competing for the right to be crowned champions and claim the Stevenage Town Tag Rugby Cup.

The tournament was run in conjunction with Saracens and the Stevenage School Sports Co-ordinator Partnership. Each game was seven-a-side and eight minutes in length.

The four semi-finalists were Codicote, Aston St Mary's, Bedwell and Martins Wood.

Martins Wood were victorious against Bedwell, while Codicote beat Aston St Mary's.

The final saw Martins Wood get off to a flyer with two quick tries before Codicote fought back to score some impressive tries with good handling and evasive running.

With the lead changing hands a number of times, it was Codicote who managed to win in the end.

Stevenage Town's club chairman Steve Mudd said: "Thanks have to go to MBDA for their sponsorship, the mayor for coming down to present the awards and Sportsmatch, Herts Sports Partnership and The Rugby Zone as funding partners for the rugby club's community rugby coach, Gareth Lewis.

"Without the backing of these organisations, it would be impossible to sustain youth development in the town.

"Of course, there should be thanks to all the teachers, club coaches, parents and young school sports leaders who made the effort to bring their teams down to the event because, without players, there would be no tournament.

"A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make Friday such a success and showed that there is such a bright future for rugby in the area.
