Letchworth's first team maintained bragging rights over their seconds after a hard-fought victory.

They remain second in the East League Division Two South as goals from Robbie Balsom, Scott Aps, Ian Heywood and Matthew Scott earned a 4-1 win.

Brian Ward scored a consolation for the seconds.

Other scores: Letchworth III 5 (Tom McIntyre-Brown, Marc Bozdogan, James Badcock, Ben Abbott, Graham Swift) Bishop's Stortford V 0; Royston II 2 Letchworth IV 8 (Gary Puttnam five, Kevin Smith two, Tony Major); West Herts VI 2 Letchworth V 2 (Ken Hall two); Letchworth VI 2 Hertford IV 0.

Blueharts remain fourth in the East Hockey League Premier A despite a 5-2 defeat at Cambridge City.

They hope to stay on course for a top three finish by gaining a good result when they host Bishop's Stortford this Saturday.

A sluggish Harts team enabled Cambridge to dominate early proceedings on Saturday and take a three-goal lead.

Harts began to pass the ball around well before Oz bound Peter Cornell pulled one back in a move involving Oliver Hammond and Jimmy Lewis.

Cornell is currently on his way to Australia to play hockey for the University of Sydney.

The second half summed up Harts' season in many ways.

Harts were by far the stronger of the two teams at this stage, and created plenty of chances but it was Cambridge who extended their lead.

Harts did score again, man of the match Danny Fair playing in Paul Buckland who hit a first-time shot that left the keeper rooted to the spot.

Buckland nearly made it two in a row in similar circumstances, as this time Lewis played an inch-perfect crossfield ball to him and he narrowly missed the far post.

Cambridge had the last word when another goal from a penalty corner meant they scored four out of six from their corner routines.

It was father versus son as Stevenage's two top stoppers - Tim and Jack Dingley (shown above) - came head-to-head for the first time in league action. As expected the first XI continued their recent run of improved results by beating their second team 4-1 in Division Three on Saturday.

The deadlock was broken when John Mould crossed for Gary Brown who slammed home from a few yards out with a stunned Dingley junior wondering where his defence had gone!

A few minutes later and it was 2-0, Danny Blackburn and Nick Russell combined well down the right and after some classy stick work from Russell, Blackburn had no trouble hitting the target with a well-timed strike.

Just before the break, the firsts extended their lead as Brown fired in at the far post from a few yards out.

In the second half both teams continued to attack and the second XI pulled one back as Ryall Swartz's shot deflected wickedly off Andy Blaxill's lunging challenge giving no chance to Dingley senior.

The firsts made sure of the points as Ben Oliver netted their fourth with a mishit that looped past the scrambling dive of the younger Dingley.
