Beds Senior Cup final

IAN Allinson's side capped their fantastic season by lifting the Beds Senior Cup for the fourth time in the club's history on Monday night.

Stotfold enjoyed a 3-1 win over BGB Division One side Leighton Town in the final at Luton Town's Kenilworth Road.

The result ensured a notable double for the UCL Premier Division champions.

Even more remarkable is the fact that the club's reserves also achieved the feat of winning their league and the county cup.

Stotfold became only the third team in Beds FA history to lift the senior cup with the first team and the intermediate cup with the reserves in the same season.

Chairman Phil Pateman said: "It has been our best season ever with both teams winning the double and I'm not sure if something like this has ever been done before.

"I'm chuffed to bits for everyone at the club and especially for someone like Bill Clegg. Everyone has played their part from the committee, the management, the players and the supporters.

"We will expect to lose some players to 'bigger' local clubs.

"That's the way it is and we've done our job of producing young local talent."

Stotfold are also finding out this week about which league they will be playing in next season.

In Monday's final, watched by an official attendance of 624, two strong challenges from Louis Lee engineered the first goal for himself on 12 minutes.

Lee first closed down and won a loose ball on the halfway line before pulling away from the last defender to beat the goalkeeper as he came to clear the ball on the edge of the box.

After this good start for Stotfold, Leighton started to come more into the game but poor finishing let them down in front of goal.

Shortly after Brad Gillham had been forced into a good save from the Leighton full-back, a routine clearance from the same player was sliced up into the air at the other end.

Joel Mason, with his back to goal, watched the ball as it came down and turned to volley in the second goal a minute before the break.

Leighton should have pulled one goal back 12 minutes into the second half but the gilt-edged chance was wasted.

This miss was punished shortly afterwards when Paul Garrett was fouled and Lee Allinson sent a great free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner on 64 minutes.

Their three-goal lead was short lived, however, after a free-kick from the left was turned in four minutes later.

A second yellow card for a high tackle from first goalscorer Lee put a bit more pressure on Stotfold as they were reduced to 10 men for the remainder of the game.

A good close-range save from Gillham ensured the score remained the same.
