A FIREFIGHTER is going to run the London Marathon in his uniform at the weekend, in a bid to beat a world record.
Peter Bardell, of Campton, near Hitchin, will attempt to break a Guinness world record by completing his first marathon wearing his hat, tunic, breathing apparatus set, gloves, leggings and boots, totalling around 25kg in weight, in under 7hrs 10 mins, a time set in last year's marathon by firefighter Gary Speakman.
Pete, 26, who works for Herts Fire and Rescue, said: "I saw Gary do it last year so I thought I would give it a go. I'm feeling a bit nervous but I'm confident I will finish the course and beat the time set last year.
"My colleagues think I'm mad but I always like a challenge and I have been training nine to 16 hours a week in preparation for the event and I'm hoping to run at least 95 per cent of the 26-mile course."
Pete will be raising money for The Donkey Sanctuary which cares for sick and injured donkeys across the world because he believes it is a charity that does not get enough recognition for its hard work.
