Six North Herts swimmers are mounting a border raid in the hope of gathering silverware.

Louise King, 17, of Hitchin, Tom Kelly, a 14 year old from Letchworth GC , Jess Karp, 13, of Baldock plus Josh Farrell, 15, and his brothers Kane, 12, and Ethan 10, also from Baldock, will race at the Beds county championships over the next two weekends.

The youngsters must travel out of their home county because they are all members of Biggleswade Swimming Club and the Biggleswade-based Mid Beds Swim Squad.

All six have high hopes of picking up medals and aim to go on to race at the Eastern Counties championships in Norwich later in the summer.

A solid performance by Letchworth Sharks on Saturday means that they are top of Division Four of the Chiltern League with one round to go - despite the issue of five speeding tickets.

Coral Smith was swimmer of the gala, winning her freestyle race in a new personal best time.

Jamie Charters won his freestyle race in a new best time, Bradley Cartwright won the men's open butterfly and Rachel Brown the 12 years butterfly in her best time.

Alessandra Stevens, Rory Myner, Alex Hawkins, Katie Shoobert and William Newton all won their events in their fastest ever times but issued the dreaded speeding tickets, Alex taking six seconds off his backstroke time in a technically perfect swim.

The 14 years girls accumulated the most points on the night with Georgina Godfrey winning the breaststroke with her lowest ever time, Erin Tomlin finishing a close second, and Michelle King setting a new butterfly personal best.

Both relay teams of Georgina, Erin, Michelle, Ellie Hardy, Georgina Quayle and Lucy Palmer won in emphatic style.

Georgina Quayle also swam in the winning ladies' open freestyle team with Holly Marshall, Katrina Bush and Rachel Murray.

Other swimmers attaining better personal times were Graham Birch, Emma Edwards, Henry Godfrey, Ellie Hardy, Michael Levet, Jacob Myner, Lucy Palmer, Sarah Plater, Hayley Smith, Dominic Stevens, Alex Szanto, Ben Taylor, Stuart Taylor, Alice Tickner and Will Tomlin.
