We have to get the best out of our players - Hay

I won't pretend that I expected a few more points on the board after four games, but the results overall in the BGB Premier show that most of the teams we have played so far are all capable of finishing in the top half.

In the summer we brought in some new players, people like Derwayne Stupple, Jon Woolf, Lee Wilson, Michael Cox and Ian Draycott.

All of these players have gone straight into the team and that represents almost a 50 per cent change to our starting line-up.

Therefore, we need some time to settle, discover the best way to use these people and the best formation to leverage off the skills they have.

We haven't quite achieved that yet, but with every game that passes, we learn something new. Each of our new players has shown, at times, what they are capable of.

Stupps adds bite to our midfield and we now have a very combative middle line. The secret is getting the best out of that unit.

Woolfy came to us as someone who ripped us apart on the flank when he was at Bedford and that impressed us. We need those qualities in our team and we have to learn how to bring our wide men more into the game.

Lee Wilson can be an excellent signing for us and I expect him to flourish in the months ahead.

Michael Cox brings great experience to our squad and he's going to make a real contribution in the months ahead.

Ian Draycott has given us a new dimension up front and introduced some competition for places. We now have three good strikers in our ranks.

While I am convinced we will see our new-look squad move up the table and secure the sort of results we are capable of, we also have to remember that we are still without Ieaun Lewis.

He may be some weeks away from returning to action, but when he does, it will be like signing a new and very talented player, one that has been sorely missed in pre-season.

I cannot fault the preparation for the new season, notwithstanding my own absence for my wedding (!), but the approach that our management team, including Mick Brooks, Rob Kleiser and with help from Dan Kennoy, has been terrific.

There is a really high level of professionalism in the way we go about pre-season and I think this will pay off.

I look carefully at how some of our opponents warm-up for games and I have to say we have a very structured and focused programme compared to some clubs.

Looking ahead, we have tough games against Brackley, Rugby and Tiverton and then we look to the FA Cup.

I would dearly love to have a run in that this year and we will be watching the result of the game between Kingsbury London Tigers and Concorde Rangers with keen interest this weekend.
