BRITAIN'S golden girl of cycling jetted out to China on Monday morning ready to achieve her greatest dream an Olympic gold medal.

Victoria Pendleton, the current women's world sprint champion, will be carrying all our support, as she attempts to strike gold at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Born and bred in Stotfold where she went to school, Victoria, 27, is currently the fastest women on earth on a bike over 200m on the track.

At the world championships earlier this year in Manchester she proved her greatness when she struck gold three times winning medals in the team sprint, individual sprint and Keirin.

She crowned a fantastic year by being the only cyclist in its 20-year history to be named the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year.

In Beijing, Victoria is seen as a clear favourite for the sprint gold and this week as she flew out her father Max spoke to the Comet.

"After the last Olympic Games she was so upset at not winning a medal," said Mr Pendleton, who will not be flying out to watch his daughter.

"She has been working very hard in training and beating her coach she is that fast at the moment.

"The family will be watching her on TV. She knows what is expected of her and at the moment is very cool.

"I spoke to her a few hours before she flew out and she has promised to call home once she is there.

"She is very fast and hopes she brings home a gold medal."

And so do all of us.

Victoria's preliminary qualifying races begin a week on Sunday.
