Whitethorn Bowls Club won their second round match in the Club Top 10 competition against Hitchin Town.

They achieved a convincing win by 93-57 on Sunday morning.

The team consisted of: Barry Platten singles 21-9; Keith Dungey and Mike Farron pairs 33-14; Terry Graham, Jerry Boakes and Ted Fuller triples 16-17; Albie McLellan, Peter Garside, Don Edwards and Terry Saunders fours 23-17.

The top rink for Hitchin was the triple of Norman Parke, Andy Hill and Alan Cook.

Whitethorn also played two friendly away matches at the weekend.

On Saturday, they played six rinks of fours at Hertford. They lost on two rinks and won on four giving them an overall win of 113-93.

The skips were Mick Gowlett, Mike Farron, Terry Saunders, Ted Fuller, Jenny Ralph and Don Edwards.

On Sunday, they enjoyed a sunny afternoon playing five rinks of fours at home against Baldock Town. Whitethorn drew one rink, lost three rinks and won a rink but overall managed a tie on shots scored 87-87.

The skips were Bob Ralph, Jenny Ralph, Tim Elderfield, Terry Saunders and Barry Platten.

Hitchin Town also exited the county Inter Club Team Championship (the English Wills trophy) on Friday with a 31-shot defeat in the second round at the hands of Royston (35-66).

Rink one: G Williams, L Hill, M Squires, I Thorne lost 12-28. Rink two: J Hill, N Parke, G Billingham, A Cook lost 9-23. Rink three: G Corda, N MacLeod, G Munge, S Dawson lost 14-15.

Hitchin's weekday bowlers played away last Thursday against the Stopsley Veterans club.

It was another poor game for Hitchin, losing by 75 shots to 49 overall, with just a single winning rink.

Rink one: Joe Corda, Neil MaCleod, Ken Porter won 21-18. Rink two: Anne Marsden, Steve Ingram, Mike Williams lost 12-17. Rink three: Brian Marsden, Mike Squires, Diane Porter lost 11-14. Rink five: John Hill, Joan Squires, John Porter lost 26-5.

Shefford staged its ladies' gala on Sunday with 20 teams competing in glorious sunshine.

After four rounds of competition, The Joybells from Henlow were the winners with 56 points. Their team was Mary Sturgeon, Joy Bland and Lynne Peck.

The runners-up were The Bluebells from Eaton Socon with 51 points.

Saturday saw the men lose 97 shots to 73 at Beech Hill. The club had one winning rink consisting of Colin Crouch, Malcolm Clarke, Dennis Stevens and Stuart Foulkes.

Howard Garden had a good week by beating Three Horseshoes away in a men's county league match by 31-23 and winning both rinks - skips Ron Williams 15-11 and Brian Pike 16-12.

On Sunday, Howard Garden won all four rinks in a friendly against Shephalbury and by 90-60 overall.

Datchworth's bowlers played through the full range of weather conditions during the week.
