The popular Standalone 10k in Letchworth Garden City is now accepting entries.

Organised by the North Herts Road Runners, this year's race will take place from Standalone Farm in Letchworth at 10am on Sunday, October 5.

The race features chip timing, a range of cash prizes across age and gender categories and a race souvenir and goodie bag for all finishers. The race is limited to 1,200 participants, so early entry is advisable.

This year's event will also includes the Herts veteran AAA championships over the accurately measured 10k course as well as a free children's fun run.

A number of Squirrels took part in the St Albans half marathon on Sunday.

The high temperature made for difficult conditions for those taking on the 13.1 mile course around the historic city.

Peter Scrowther was the first Squirrel to finish in 1-30:14 and 61st place. Alan Jones was next to complete the course, finishing in 1-40:12. He was followed in by Michael Mello in 1-44:31.

Helen Cairns recorded an excellent time in her first half marathon in testing conditions. She finished in 2-03:20. Allison Cook completed the course in 2-12:17.

Five members of the club opted to take part in the Barton 10k which also took place on Sunday. The course is a hilly affair on the edge of the Chilterns, run mostly off-road.

Gary Cook finished fourth for the second year running in a time of 39:22 and James Atkins secured the club two places in the top five coming home fifth in 39:37.

Jose Gauiria was also in action completing the race in 45:36 while Jo Summers finished in 52:47. Lindsay Cook completed the North Herts entrants by finishing in 1-03:56.

Six Fairlands Valley Spartans tackled the St Albans undulations in Sunday's half marathon.

The race was best described as hot, hilly and hard but attracted 2,400 runners.

First Spartan to finish was Ben Harris in 1-32:00 and he was followed by Jim Brown in 1-33:43, Tim Pine 1-35:31, Paul Holgate 1-59:51, Ron Cohen 2-20:33 and Balvinder Kandola 2-22:17.

Jeanette Collins ran the third race in the Harlow Ladies 5k series in 29:17 last Tuesday. Then, on Sunday, she ran the Race for Life at Stanborough in 30:03.

Four Spartans went to Norfolk on Sunday to take part in the Poppyline off-road marathon. David Bowker finished in 5-36, while Mike Newbitt, Chas Avis and Mark Sanders recorded times of 5-41, 6-11 and 6-38 respectively.

Roger Biggs travelled to Devon for an event for which purgatory would not be a strong enough word to use! Over 32 miles of brutally hilly Dartmoor roads, with rain, hail and a thunderstorm thrown in for good measure, he was 76th out of 154 finishers in 5-20:08.

Biggs and Dave Farthing were also recently in Ireland for the Cork Marathon. In sunny and muggy conditions, Roger finished in 3-36:59 and Dave in 4-50:25.
