SUNDAY saw the first action in this season's KLM Challenge Cup (writes Darren 'Statto' Jones).

The real upset saw Division Four new boys Great Ashby hammer Division Two leaders ProCladd. Gary Ashley hit four of the goals, Leon Perren and Aaron Reed also netted in their first win of the season. Neil Henderson's brace in reply was mere consolation.

North Herts Celtic may be having a poor season in Division Three, but enjoyed the break from league action to hit double figures against their Division Two opponents. They hit three in the first 15 minutes to set out their stall.

Breachwood Lions put up little resistance and could not deal with the crisp passing. Max Howard (four), Daniel Burley (hat-trick), Bradley Oliver, John Reilly and Mark Welch saw them home. Chad Eldridge and Rob Pearson replied.

The other 'giant-killing' saw Phil Fisher open the scoring with a neat finish for MBDA before Craig Longman equalised from the penalty spot for Division Two side A1 Trophies. However, the Division Three side were back in front through little Rob Barton's looping header, before Alan Kenney's thunderbolt made it three at the break. Louis Hare rounded Matty Stanton just after half-time before Fisher completed the rout late on from 20 yards.

There were two all-Premier Division clashes. Marc Holmes, Rikki Doyle and Scott Mahoney netted in Dun Cow's extra-time win over JAP Builders. Michael Hatch and Dave Pateman replied.

Mallard had a comfortable win. Glen Lamacraft (two), Jim Bywater, Perry Phillips, Tommy Henry and Ian Baker netted. It was a good battle and they only confirmed victory with four in the last 20 minutes. DC Outbar gave a good account of themselves and had equalised through Lee Metselaar.

Danny Lane, Danny McIver, Nikki Clements, James Dillnutt and a bullet header from old warhorse Tony Heath saw Dun Cow Res through. Broadhall's reposte came from the impressive Jake Mongston who added two more to his tally.

Both sides had players missing as the top two in Division Three met for the second week running. Stevenage Leisure Ltd started the brightest and Jamie Drackford lobbed the keeper from outside the area to give them the lead.

Stevenage Fencing equalised thanks to a thunderbolt from Graham Kimber. A Drackford header luckily went through the keeper's legs to restore the lead before Carl Smith finished the game off.

Fox won a nine-goal thriller. Ross Walker (two), Kev Ward, Gary Henniker and Simon Flecknell were on target. Carl Thompson, Ricky Wilson, John Patrick and Ashley Bennett replied for a gallant Chequers.

Putterills went two in front against MC Racing, both courtesy of Stewart Duff. Dave Banks soon joined in the fun when he slotted past the keeper, before Sam Harte made it four after lashing home in a move which started in defence. They went nap when Steve Smith finished coolly from Jimmy Anderson's pass.

At this point, MC Racing made a real fight of it, James Cox's good finish, Anthony Koop's cheeky lob from a tight angle and a Jack Mitchell own goal from Cox's cross-shot saw them peg three back.

Paul Herring scored the opener for Bedwell Athletic with an easy finish into an empty net. Joel Mason then chased down the keeper and nicked the ball in the challenge, before sliding home.

Herring got his second with a powerful drive into the bottom corner and Gareth Hopkins got his first goal for the club with a bullet header from a corner. Mason's second came late on, Tony Wells' corner met with a sideways scissor-kick volley.

Pin Green replied through an Adam Stevens brace, although both had a hint of own goal about them.

Peter Lane (hat-trick) and a magnificent Oliver Wisker strike put Stevenage Colts Old Boys through against Roebuck Wanderers.

Coopers' Brian Challice opened the scoring before White Lion Walkern levelled with a magnificent volley from Mark Woods. Challice then broke down the wing and hit a superb strike from 20 yards into the top corner. Old campaigner Calvert Garnes got the third with a tap-in.

White Lion Walkern did well considering the 10-0 defeat to the same opponents a month ago.

There was no Premier Division action as Nirankari Sports Sabha's rumoured resignation from the league was confirmed.

In Division One, Matt Arlick grabbed his seventh goal of the season with a crisp volley across the keeper to give Emperors Head the lead.

Herts Fencing grabbed the equaliser on the half hour when Ryan Eady was put through by Anthony Lanni. They turned the game around on the hour when Russell Ayles took the ball down on his chest and volleyed past the keeper.

Steve Harris restored parity when he took on the midfield and defence single handedly. Fencing won it as Karl Williamson's exquisite ball put Ayles in, who coolly took it round the keeper and slotted home.

In Division Two, last season's promoted sides continue to do well and King Pin United scored twice inside five minutes. Dave Holmes struck the first blow before Adam Bannister finished off an excellent passing move, before adding another. James Wyatt got in on the scoring act with a delightful 25-yard shot before Shaun Skutella finished from a tight angle. Those had sandwiched two Mike Coombes penalties for Old Town Wetherspoons, before Dave Harris grabbed another consolation.

Marquis of Lorne stay bottom despite grabbing their official first league win.

However, it was Times Club who took the lead, a long throw-in from Richard Neville found Karl Rickaby to flick a header over the keeper. Jason Lovelock equalised from the penalty spot.

A goalmouth scramble was poked in by Daniel Quirk to turn the game around before the equaliser from 20 yards came courtesy of a Mark Brennan free-kick. A slip in the mud from the keeper saw the ball trickle under his body to give Frazer Triggs the winner.

In Division Three, Probuild Res largely dominated the game but fell behind to Roebuck Gate's only real chance from Scott Apps.

Elliott Bunn got the equaliser, exchanging a neat one-two with Craig Braine before unleashing a screamer into the top corner. Bunn netted again, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from Ian Woodfield's lay-off.

A big kick from keeper Daryl Phillips sent Woodfield clear and he slotted home number three. The returning Jamie Campany soon got in on the act, Woodfield again assisting. Woodfield added his second when Gary Pomfret slid him in before the final goal came when Chris Simpson pulled the ball back for Lee Reece to fire home.

SCS were comfortable winners over Red Lion Woolmer Green who are still looking for that elusive first goal.

Stevenage Colts Old Boys Res came crashing back down to earth after the 100 per cent start was shattered by Terry Lock. The tricky striker banged in six goals, while Ross Skipper added the other for Athletico Timebridge who stayed 100 per cent themselves and leapfrogged Colts at the top. The consolations came from Dean Page and Barry Hazleton.

Yorkshire Grey had a stroll over Coach and Horses thanks to Ben Collins (two), Lewis Sealy, Ashley Sealy and Robbie Freeman.
