The home club had plenty to cheer about as Hertfordshire's first ever county men's championships was staged at the Marriotts Gymnastics Centre on Sunday.

In the oldest age group for gymnasts 15 and over, the overall championship was won by Jack Maydom who also took gold on floor, pommel, and high bar, as well as silver on the other three pieces.

Kier Chettleburgh took gold on rings, vault and parallel bar, and silver on floor and high bar.

Unfortunately, the club's third representative in the group, Andrew Henry, had to withdraw due to a chipped bone in his finger.

In the under-14 section, Daniel Gardner took the overall championship with gold on each of the six pieces of apparatus. Callum Adams, who has only been competing for just under a year, took silver overall and on all pieces.

The under-12 section saw Sebastian Jaunzens take the overall championship, including gold on parallel bars and high bar, plus silver on floor, pommel and vault, and bronze on rings.

In the same section, Ben Drew took silver on rings and bronze on floor and vault, and Alex Carrier took gold on pommel. The club's other representative in this section was Zoli Andrews who was just out of the medals.

In the under-10 section, the overall bronze was won by Nathan Tella who also took silver on floor. Noah Hume took bronze on floor, with Ross Bell and Kieran McGowan also performing well in the competition.

Also, in the under-eight year old competition, the club was represented by Tom Clements, Rafal Marczak, Robbie Nightingale, Luca Moscardini and Rory Milne.

While there was only one medal which went to Tom Clements, taking bronze on vault, the young boys performed well and gained valuable experience.

These championships had representatives from Sapphire Gym Club (Hemel Hempstead), Berkhamsted and Marriotts, and proved to be a great success. It is hoped that this will be the first of many men's county championships as the sport develops further in Hertfordshire.

In the morning, the girls' level five county championships saw Louisa Field competing in the youngest age group for eight/nine-year-olds.

She took second on vault and third on floor, but an error on beam left her out of the overall medals.

n The acrobatic gymnasts from Marriotts took part in the regional championships at Ipswich on Sunday.

There were great results from the acro team of nine who came away with 10 medals between them.

In the regional B grade women's tumbling, Alice Tomlinson took gold in the eight years age group and following her success, Kiera Hicks and Emma Hayter came first and second respectively in the nine/10 years age group with Kathryn Barns just missing out on a medal in fourth position.

Leanne Merrill earned the gold position in the regional D grade tumbling 13 plus years.

In national one grade tumbling, Emma Hepsoe came second in the aged nine/10 years age group, while Evangeline Evans took third in the aged 13 plus tumbling.

Ellen Daly entered the national two aged 11/12 years and her performance gained her first place.

There were more medals for the gymnasts entering the pairs and group competitions on the floor. In the pairs competition, there was double success with Evangeline Evans and Keira Hicks winning their preparatory A pairs level, and with Kelly Stringer and Emma Hayter also taking gold in the preparatory B pairs level.

Emma Hepsoe also paired up with Leanne Merrill for the grade two pairs but narrowly missed out on the medals by coming fourth.

The group floor saw Ellen Daly, Emma Hepsoe and Keira Hicks take part in the grade one women's group gaining bronze for their floor routine.
