LETCHWORTH Ladies' winning run in East League Division One ended with a 3-0 away defeat at Wapping.

They started brightly and had the best of the attacking play in the opening quarter of an hour, with Sarah Parkhouse and Leonie Cherry in particular creating some excellent opportunities.

Wapping, showing good organisation and resilience, gradually eased their way back into the game to set up an exciting passage of play in which both teams played some excellent hockey.

The game turned after half an hour on an appalling umpiring decision - even acknowledged by the opposition - to award the home side a penalty corner from which they took the lead.

Letchworth failed to raise their game after that and two more penalty corner strikes midway through the second half sealed a victory for the home side which was deserved on balance but by a margin which flattered.

Stevenage Ladies were defeated 2-0 by a youthful Southend first team.

Their first goal came early in the first half. There was some strong defending from player of the match Liz Gates who put in some crucial tackles.

Stevenage had a few opportunities with Holly Mould having a shot tipped wide.

The second goal came midway through the second half after defending a couple of short corners.

Other results: Stevenage Ladies II 3 (Debbie Church two, Nicky Brackley) Shefford and Sandy II 0; St Albans IV 4 Stevenage Ladies III 1 (Nicki Reynolds); Letchworth IV 0 Stevenage Ladies IV 1 (Louise Mevillot); Stevenage Ladies V 0 Bedford V 5.

Blueharts Ladies seconds were away to Luton thirds and showed their local rivals they meant business by beating them 4-0.

A hat-trick for Gina Joseph and a cracker for Sharon Martin was enough to seal the game.

Nicky Baxter, player of the match, was outstanding in midfield.

The thirds, newcomers to Division Six, won 3-1 against St Albans.

Kim Jury scored the first goal before St Albans equalised before half time. Blueharts scored further goals through Helen Woolly and Hannah Ross.
