Letchworth Golf Club staged its annual seniors open for visitors from far and wide.

The Heritage Foundation Cup and Ken Hammond Salver attracted a full field of 60 players from 25 golf clubs from around England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales for the scratch and handicap competitions.

The prizes were presented by Ian Webb, finance director of the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, sponsors of the scratch trophy, and Ken Hammond who donated a silver salver for the handicap winner.

The excellent weather and condition of the course led to many low scores being shot.

Local knowledge seemed to help for the overall winner of the Heritage Foundation Cup was home member Craig Cameron with a gross 74, who won on countback from Martin McKenna, also on 74.

The Ken Hammond Salver was won by Graham Ryan from Caddington Golf Club with 39 stableford points.

Letchworth Golf Club welcomes the public on both its main course and par three facility during the week.

It has a full schedule of inter-club fixtures as well as hosting many opens during the year for juniors, ladies, seniors and mixed events.

These are advertised on the club's official website www.letchworthgolfclub.com

If you are interested in the golf club, membership or just playing a round of golf, call club secretary/manager Niki Hunter on 01462 683203.

* The sun shone for the fourth Riders Cup which took place in September at Mount Pleasant Golf Club in Lower Stondon.

This is an annual three-way match between the Flat Jockey 'All Stars', the Racing Press and a Club and Guests Team.

Many favourable comments were made about the course including Rishi Persad from the BBC, who had just flown in from Beijing, saying: "These are the best and fastest greens I've played on this year."

There were 10 players on each side, playing on a stableford format, with all scores counting.

The 'All Star' Jockeys won for the second year running with a total score of 331, in second place was the Club and Guests, scoring 306, and bringing up the rear were the Racing Press with 287.

The prize for the highest score in each team went to J P Guillambert (Jockeys) 38, Harry West (Club) 35 and Fred Coulter (Press) 41.

Nearest the pin was won by Jason Weaver and longest drive by Fred Coulter.

The day raised more than £1,200 for charity to be split between the captain's charity, the Garden House Hospice (£600), Injured Jockey Fund (£200), Racing Welfare (£200) and Riding for the Disabled (£200).

The main sponsors were Barry Dennis and BETDAQ and other sponsors included Bet 365, Coral, Simon Kingshot, John White, Ladbrookes, Grimes, West End Racing, William Hill and Simon Holt (CH4).

It is hoped that the cup will continue next year on a date to be confirmed.
