A teenager who only started playing three years ago, and learned her entire game at Letchworth, is now on the verge of selection to the full British Army XV.

Rosie 'Randy' Randfield, aged 18, was introduced to the game by her sister, and joined Letchworth's girls' XV near the end of its first season.

Her background in athletics was to prove a huge asset to the team as Randy developed a reputation for being almost uncatchable once she got the ball in her hands.

The flying wing developed into a powerful running centre, and picked up county honours in 2006.

A member of the local army cadets, Randy joined up early last season and was soon a selected for her corps team, playing regular adult rugby while still only 17.

This Saturday will see Randy's biggest challenge yet as she competes for a place in the full British Army squad when they play against Old Albanians Saints in St Albans.

The British Army women's team is close to international standard, regularly playing against national teams.

Two more girls, Sasha Acheson and Hayley Guilder, have been called up for the final trial for the England under-20 squad this Sunday.

Both girls are still only 17 and will be one match away from joining the best under-20 team in the world.

Hayley, in particular, only started playing when the girls' section at Letchworth was formed four years ago, and has learned her entire game at the club.

The girls' former coach, Joe Randall, who is now studying at the University of Gloucestershire, is head coach for Gloucestershire girls and manager of South West (North) Region.

Joe coached the girls to several regional and national trophies while still a pupil at Hitchin Boys' School, and will be easily the youngest regional manager and county coach in the game.

* Any girls aged 12-18 interested in giving rugby a try are invited along to Letchworth.

The girls train every Thursday evening from 6-7.30pm, and play or train every Sunday. Call John Birch on 01462 623205 for details, or visit the team's website at http://letchworthgirls.blogspot.com
