Baldock and District Canoe Club members were out in force at the Nene canoe slalom competition at the weekend in Northampton.

Paul Schuster competed in the Division Four men's kayak (K1) event on Saturday.

A confident second run, making up for an unfortunate swim in his first, saw Paul finish in fourth place. This was enough to see him promoted to Division Three in his second ever slalom event.

Veteran Terry Griffiths entered the Division Two event on both days.

The competition was close and on Saturday Terry pulled through into first place. On Sunday, he was pipped into second place losing to the winner by a couple of seconds.

Brian McCusker entered the main Division Two event and put in good fast performances on both days to take the second place divisional veteran place on Saturday (13th overall) and first place divisional veteran (12th overall) on Sunday.

Paul Stephens had a successful weekend entering both the Division Two C1 (single Canadian canoe) and K1 events.

In the C1, he came third on the Saturday and eighth on the Sunday.

His good performances were also reflected in his K1 results where he came third on Saturday and fourth on the Sunday.

Alistair Riches entered the Division Three event on Sunday.

His first run was solid but unfortunately his results were lost by the officials and so he was required to do a re-run which was less successful and resulted in him capsizing.

Alistair worked hard to achieve another solid run later in the day and finished 13th.

Carmel Buttimer entered the Division Two K1 ladies' event and recorded her best results of the season. She came seventh on the Saturday and eighth on the Sunday.

Michelle Grudzinski and Buttimer entered the Division Two/Three C2 (two person Canadian canoe) event and put in some reasonable performances to come fourth.

Grudzinski was unable to compete in this event on the Sunday due to injury, so Buttimer competed with a new partner, Heather Slater.

The girls did an excellent second run to finish fourth.

Grudzinski was also entered in the Division Two K1 and Division Three C1 events.

Like Buttimer, she recorded her best ever points in the Division Two event.

On the Saturday she came fifth and on the Sunday fourth. Her performance in the C1 was not as good - she came fourth on both days but had a swim in her first run on the Sunday.

Members of the club will compete at this weekend's competition at Cardington, run by Viking Kayak Club, in preparation for the national interclubs competition finals the following week.
