SHILLINGTON Shadows travelled to Biggleswade to take on Ivel Saints for an indoor cup game in Division Two of the Heritage Netball League.

After umpiring problems for the away team and Tracey Forsyth gallantly stepping in at the last minute, the game finally commenced half an hour late.

It was clear from the outset that indoor netball lent itself well to the Shadows' game plan allowing centre Katie Finlayson to use long passes to get the ball down the court.

However, some careless footwork and contact nearly cost the Shadows the quarter and this was further compounded by an injury which forced Dawn Maydom, wing attack, to leave the court.

She was replaced by Liz Mortimer.

Despite these setbacks the Shadows managed to just take the lead 14-13.

The second quarter saw the Saints hit back with some strong attacking and interceptions which resulted in them taking the quarter 12-7.

At half time and with the game tied, the Shadows took the tactical decision to bring Lisa Spragg on as centre and Amanda Noble as wing defence.

This change seemed to work well with Lisa playing the whole court and intercepting the ball away from the Saints at every opportunity and Amanda, who was playing out of position, showing her strength as a strong defending player.

As a direct result the third quarter ended 13-2 in favour of the Shadows.

As the final 15 minutes of the game were played the Shadows struggled to retain their lea.

Ival Saints showed an increased energy and enthusiasm for the game.

This tested the defence of Dawn Maydom who had courageously returned to play goal keeper and Ann Hollings, goal defence, who made it difficult for the Saints.

In the end the Shadows won the match three quarters to one.
