MORE than a dozen village children began digging for victory this week aiming to see an old BMX track restored and emerge from a field.

The old course was built over a quarter of a century ago on land behind Stocks Lane, Gamlingay, and eventually abandoned.

When children in the village said they wanted a BMX track to ride on, the Forward Gamlingay group came to their rescue raising funds and volunteers in an attempt to make the dream become a reality.

Not only did cash flow in but offers for help including the use of a big digger this week after a local builder decided to make the digging and soil moving easier.

On Monday morning 50 tons of soil was delivered to the site and yesterday the children started the task of putting their final plans into motion.

One of the children, Jeremy Smith, drew up the plans for the site which, hopefully, will be open within the next few weeks.

"The old track was built over 25 years ago and needed replacing. So when the children said they wanted a new BMX track to ride on again we launched a campaign and now we are close to completing the track," said Hayley Grist, a youth worker with Forward Gamlingay who can see the project taking shape from her nearby home.

"The soil arrived this week and now the children are following their plans making the hills and curves to the track they want.

"It has been a hard slog in the mud but the kids have been great and we have had wonderful help from local people and businesses.

"The digger was a godsend because the earth was dumped some way from the track site because the lorry couldn't get through.

"Young people want things to do here and we listened to them. But thank God we had half term this week because the children have given a lot of time and worked very hard to see their dream come true.
