ENTHUSIASTIC volunteers made their own contribution to Stevenage's Britain In Bloom campaign last week.

Seven members of the Positive Activities for Young People Programme (PAYP) showed their creative skills by planting hanging baskets that will provide a summer floral display for the sailing centre and café at Fairlands Valley Park.

PAYP contacted the In Bloom Forum earlier in the year to volunteer their services for the town's environmental project.

Last year these young people helped to raise money for Lonsdale School's playground project so the In Bloom Forum was keen to take up their offer of help.

Jean Allinson, In Bloom Forum member, said: "We are very proud of the town's clean, green environment which includes over 350 acres of well-maintained open space including parks, woodland, conservation areas, town centre gardens and Fairlands Valley Park.

"Because of the council and the community's ongoing work, 68 per cent of Stevenage people are satisfied with the condition of our parks and open spaces. This particular project was great fun and the baskets will provide a wonderful splash of colour for visitors to Fairlands this summer."
