Teddy Sheringham is hoping his Stevenage side can carry on where they left off against Gillingham in the FA Cup last weekend by claiming maximum returns from tomorrow’s (Saturday) trip to Yeovil Town in a game he has admitted is already a “relegation six-pointer”.

Boro currently sit 20th in the division, five points clear of Paul Sturrock’s men - who they are due to face in the FA Cup Second Round in two weeks time, also at Huish Park - but are yet to win on their travels in any competition this season.

In contrast, Town have delivered two energy-sapping away cup victories in the last six days - winning 1-0 at Maidstone United in the FA Cup despite finishing the game with nine men and a midweek penalty shootout victory over League One leaders Gillingham in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy - so the former Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and England striker feels the time is now right to capitalise on the tired Glovers. Especially in the wake of Boro’s commanding 3-0 victory over the Gills in their previous game.

When asked if he sees Boro’s trip to Huish Park as a six-pointer, Sheringham said: “It is. It’s a case of being focussed and attentive. My first message for my players at the start of the week was ‘we don’t want them [Yeovil] getting anywhere near us in the league’.

“At the same time, we’re going to try and win the game as well. It’s no different to any other fixture we’ve had. We have to be very cautious.

“We know that in Yeovil’s pre-match meeting they are saying ‘it would be nice to close the gap on the people around us’ and that’s what football is all about.

“We know they’ve [Yeovil] worked hard in their last two games but when you’re winning games like they have in the last week, you want the next game to come along so there’s the positive and negative to come out of ttheir busy week but all in all it’s still a very difficult fixture for us.”

Loan keeper Jesse Joronen may have played his last game for Stevenage having come off injured during their cup exploits against former team-mate Justin Edinburgh’s Gillingham.

The diagnosis of his midriff injury is inconclusive but Sheringham believes the Fulham man, who has impressed the Boro boss since temporarily moving to the Lamex Stadium, could be sidelined for up to six weeks, a stint that would take him to the end of this current loan deal.

He continued: “It’s a shame for us if he doesn’t get to play again because he’s a fantastic young goalkeeper.

“He’s brought a certain calmness to our team. He’s not let in many poor goals, he could have done better with a couple but not any that you would say ‘come on Jesse, what you doing? Liven up’ and he’s certainly had a positive effect on our back four.

“I would like to see him back here until the end of the season. That would do him the world of good and would also show Fulham exactly what he can do.”

Sheringham was critical of the three-game suspension that will see experienced midfield maestro Michael Tonge miss Boro’s trip to Somerset through suspension.

The former Sheffield United and Leeds United man saw red in Stevenage’s 5-1 League Two drubbing courtesy of Oxford United a fortnight ago.

Sheringham said: “Tongey’s suspension is harsh for us. I didn’t even think it was a bad foul. I saw the challenge at the time and I stick by him 100 per cent.

“It’s a shame he’s got a three-game ban for that. It’s ridiculous he’s got a three-game ban for it but we have to make the best of it.”
