An online scrapbook documenting photographs and reminiscences of Wymondley parish, near Hitchin, has gone from strength to strength since being featured in the Comet.

The Wymondley Scrapbook, on Facebook, featured in the Comet in early July.

Scrapbook founder and chief administrator Robbie Howard said: “We have had an amazing response since the Comet article, and our membership has shot up to over 270.

“We have also received many more photos and there are now over 700 photos in 20 albums for people to view and comment on.

“Many of the photographs have not previously been in the public domain, so we are delighted with how the scrapbook has taken off.”

Some photographs have been posted with very little information about the stories behind them, such as who the pictures show and where they were taken.

Nigel Billingham, who is helping with the scrapbook, has put out the call for help filling in the gaps as they create a digital archive for Little Wymondley, Great Wymondley and the rest of the parish.

“We would love Comet readers to see if they can identify anyone in the photographs and let us know any information,” said Nigel.

“I would encourage anyone with an interest in the Wymondleys to join the scrapbook on Facebook, and view all the photographs.”

Pictures newly added to the collection include shots showing Wymondley School pupils around 1920 and 1970, Wymondley Scouts in 1969, and an undated photograph showing the filling in of the Great Wymondley pond.

The scrapbook team are to hold an in-person get-together next month in Little Wymondley.

Chris Turvey, who administers the group alongside Robbie, said: “We are well aware that many older residents do not have access to social media but would like to contribute to Wymondley Scrapbook.

“We would like to invite everyone to an informal get-together at the Bucks Head on Saturday, October 6, at 3pm when people can come along, bring their old photos, buy themselves a cream tea or a drink, and view all the photos on Wymondley Scrapbook.

“Members of the group are welcome to attend.”
