WORK has started on a modern cemetery which a council hopes will be a blueprint for others in the district.

Contractors have moved in at Wilbury Hills Cemetery near Letchworth GC to prepare the site for building work which will begin in the summer.

The plans for the cemetery include a non-denominational chapel of rest and mausoleums designed to meet the needs of the local community.

The site will offer contemporary burial facilities, amenity space and a variety of burial options including eco plots, child graves, family plots and space for niche interments, while the surrounding parkland has been set aside for public use.

The main hall, which will be suitable for people of any religion, will house funeral services, prayer and celebration.

North Hertfordshire District Council will work with local schools on projects involving religious studies.

The preparatory work at the cemetery will last for two weeks.
