MAJOR work developing Wilbury Hills Cemetery on the edge of Letchworth GC is due to start on Monday.

The first part of the project involves the construction of concrete piles for the foundations of the planned buildings.

"Unfortunately this is a noisy operation and is expected to last for up to three days," said a North Herts District Council spokesman.

During this time the cemetery will be closed for burials but will remain open for visitors as normal.

The council says it has worked hard with the developer to keep nuisance and inconvenience to a minimum during the development of the cemetery which represents a significant investment by the council in its cemetery service.

The ambitious plans for the cemetery include a non-denominational chapel of rest and mausoleums designed to meet the needs of the local community.

The site will offer a modern approach with contemporary burial facilities, amenity space and a variety of burial options including eco plots, child graves, family plots and space for niche interments, while the surrounding parkland has been laid out for public use.

The main hall, which will be suitable for people of any religion, will provide space for funeral services, prayer and celebration.

The council will be working with local schools on projects involving religious studies.

It intends to use the flagship new cemetery as a blueprint for others in the district.
