Get your flags ready, the route of the Women’s Tour 2015 has been released which reveals the streets the cyclists will whizz along later this summer.

The race will see top female cyclists from all over the world compete in the event which will race past the doorsteps of people in Royston, Walkern and Stevenage.

In Stevenage the route enters the town along Fairlands Way, then travels up Verity Way, Vardon Road, down Grace Way and Almonds Lane.

It then passes through Walkern Road, Letchmore Road and finishes in High Street near Waitrose on June 20.

In total five stages of the race will take place across the country, with Hertfordshire claiming stage 4.

Race director Mick Bennett: “We know from 2014 just how popular the Hertfordshire stage was and this should prove a day not to be missed for cycling fans.”

Stevenage Borough Council leader, Sharon Taylor said, “Stevenage has a great sporting and cycling heritage and I’m pleased that we’re hosting Stage Four of the Women’s Tour.

“It’ll be great to see so many residents, fans and fellow cycling enthusiasts cheering the women on as they come through our town.”

The race will also come to Royston. The route which was announced today will enter the town along Barkway Road before heading up Priory Lane, Melbourn Street and Baldock Road.

The riders will then head south along the heath to Therfield before passing through Walkern to end in Stevenage.

Royston town councillor Lindsay Davidson said: “I’m really pleased for Royston, it will be a lovely event for everybody.

“It will bring an exciting buzz to the town and will hopefully bring more people here.

“This is our moment to shine. Hopefully it will be managed well without too many traffic disruptions.”

MP for North East Hertfordshire Sir Oliver Heald welcomed the announcement, he said: “I am excited to hear that the Women’s Tour will be riding through Royston in June.

“Cycling is very popular locally and I am sure that Royston will give the cyclists a warm welcome.”

The Hertfordshire part of the five-stage race will start in Waltham Cross and then head north through Cheshunt to Hertford. It reaches its most northerly point when it passes through Royston, before dropping down to Walkern and turning left for the final run in to the finish in Stevenage Old Town 63.4 miles later.

Last year the race ended in the spectator-lined streets of Welwyn Garden City with Marianne Vos snatching first place before going on to win the overall race, going through Letchworth and Baldock en route.
