TWO men made off with a large amount of money in Hitchin after robbing two women at gunpoint in broad daylight on Saturday.

The men approached the women, who were leaving the O’Brien butchers shop on the Wallace Way Industrial Estate, just after 6.30pm in a dark car with false registration plates.

The women were told to hand over their keys and phones, after both offenders pulled out small handguns.

The men then took the women’s handbags - which contained large quantities of cash - before making off in an unknown direction.

Detective Inspector Neil Waring is investigating the incident.

He said: “This was an audacious robbery which happened in broad daylight and was a frightening experience for the victims.

“I would urge anyone who may have any information at all in relation to this incident to contact us as soon as possible.

“Did you see a dark coloured vehicle acting suspiciously in or around Wallace Way or the industrial estate prior to, or after 6.30 pm?

“If you have any information at all, no matter how small you think it may be, please contact us as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone with information can contact DI Waring on 0845 33 00 222, quoting log 758 on July 2.
