A grey Audi carrying at least four people rolled over at around 4am in St Michael’s Road and hit a tree – with a young woman treated at the scene after being knocked out.

The woman, believed to be in her late teens or early 20s, was then taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

A search of the area was carried out by police with assistance from the dog unit and a police helicopter, but no-one was found.

Police are currently trying to trace the owners of the car to establish whether it was taken without consent – possibly by joyriders.

A source told the Comet: “Three boys in the car ran off from the scene leaving a girl unconscious at the scene.”

The vehicle was recovered from the grass verge and the road was reopened at 6.50am.

A police spokesman added: “A group of people were allegedly seen making off from the area after the incident.

“Enquiries are continuing.”
