BORO wideman Lawrie Wilson says the team have to produce the level of performance they displayed in the second half of Saturday’s defeat to Chesterfield for a full 90 minutes if they want to push up the npower League 2 table.

After a spluttering first half showing Boro upped their game in the second 45 minutes at the B2net Stadium and were only denied a share of the spoils by some outstanding goalkeeping from Tommy Lee, and Wilson says that is the level of performance Boro need to produce all game, every game.

“It’s very disappointing to come here and not get a point, or even three points,” Wilson told The Comet afterwards.

“The performance in the second half showed what we are capable of and we need to sustain that for 90 minutes and not just 45.

“It’s never good going a goal down before you react. You always want to act first and be the team that scores first.”

Wilson had a great opportunity to draw Boro level two minutes after the break only to see Lee pull off a splendid save to deny him.

The Boro man said: “He’s got a great hand to it. Maybe I could have got a little more power to it but it’s a great save.

“You look at their ‘keeper and say he’s man of the match really. He’s made three good saves, they’re chances we like to take, some games they go in some they don’t.”

Saturday's game was hampered by severe winds which wreaked havoc taking goalkicks straight out and making crosses hard to judge but Wilson says Boro won't use the far from ideal conditions as an excuse.

He said: “It wasn’t the best, the balls going all over the place and it was hard to judge but we don’t use those as excuses it’s still football and you just have to get on with it.”

Wilson was Boro’s stand-out performer at the B2net Stadium, enjoying the better of Spirites left-back Gregor Robertson on numerous occassions and whipping in several teasing crosses. Manager Graham Westley praised Wilson's work with full-back Ronnie Henry on the right flank but admitted the pair had failed to capitalise on their excellent build up play.

“Ronnie and Lawrie built some great play down the right hand side,” the Boro boss said.

“They had a lot of difficulty with the conditions in terms of selecting the right ball to play.

“Lawrie whipped in a couple and they helter-skeltered out of play. He hung a couple and they drifted beyond our onrushing attackers.

“We saw them struggling to capitalise on their good work down the right but their build up play was excellent.”
