Midfielder eager to impress Westley

MARVIN Williams says he is hopeful of securing a permanent deal with Stevenage.

The attacking midfielder is currently on trial at the Lamex Stadium and is hoping that his time with the club will see him earn a contract until at least the end of the current season.

Williams came off the bench against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday and played last week in a reserve team game and hopes his experience of League football – he counts Millwall and Brentford as well as Swedish side Ostersunds FK among his former clubs – will work in his favour.

“I’m on trial at the moment with Stevenage. I signed a non-contract form to make me available last weekend and hopefully later this week I’ll find out my fate,” Williams told The Comet.

“Things seem to be going well, they’re going well in training. I’ve been out of the English game playing in Sweden and I’ve been trying to keep myself ticking over and keeping myself fit.

“I’m not quite where I want to be but the training is pretty brutal and it’s doing me the world of good. I’m getting there a lot quicker and I like to think I’m doing something right.”

Williams told The Comet how he fell foul of an FA rule last season which says players cannot play for more than two clubs in one season, so after making one six-minute substitute appearance for Brentford and playing on loan at Torquay United, he had to look elsewhere for first team football and that’s when Ostersunds came into the equation.

Williams has been trying to make his way back into English football, and hopes he has impressed Boro boss Graham Westley.

“There’s a lot more I want to show the gaffer. I think at this stage he wants to see what I can do and I’m quite a versatile player which I think he likes,” Williams said.

“Maybe I’ve been hindered from playing in too many positions so I’m trying to get a run in one position but we’ll see.

“It’s been a crazy year. I was in a predicament when I didn’t have many options left and a good friend of mine said he’d write up a letter and template, sort out a CV for me and we sent letters out to clubs. Four or five days later I got some feedback from the gaffer and he invited me down and it’s an opportunity I intend to make the most of.

“I was out in Sweden for three months and it was a really interesting experience for me culturally.

“I played just six minutes for Brentford in a cup game and had two months at Torquay but the FA said it didn’t matter if I’d played for six minutes or 60, I’d played for two clubs.

“My agent at the time said there was a club in Sweden interested to take me so I went out there, played some games, got fit and now I’m raring to go in England again.”
