WETHERSPOON will be coming to Hitchin after finding a site in the town, the company confirmed today (Tuesday).

The pub chain told the Comet it has found a suitable home, after months of looking for a venue.

It won’t reveal where the site is and will wait until exchanging contracts before doing so.

Wetherspoon said it hoped those contracts would be exchanged some point this week.

But Hitchin Conservative Club – which was put up for sale last month – looks likely to be the building the chain has bought, with tender closing on the property under two weeks ago.

An announcement on the new owners of the Sun Street premises is expected later this week, or early next week.

Town centre manager Keith Hoskins said he was “not surprised” by the news.

“We’ve known for some time that Wetherspoon has been looking actively, it was only a matter of time,” he added.

“We had already found out that they had looked at Philpotts, but decided against that.

“It doesn’t come as any surprise.”
