A MAJOR pub chain is looking at sites in Hitchin to open a new branch.
J.D.Wetherspoon has confirmed it has looked at several potential locations in the town.
The Comet understands the chain is particularly interested in former furniture shop Philpotts on Sun Street. The company would neither confirm or deny this, nor the locations of other possible venues.
A spokesman said: “Wetherspoon is looking at a number of sites in Hitchin, but cannot comment on any particular sites at this stage.”
North Herts Campaign for Real Ale chairman Brian Mason had mixed thoughts on the plans.
“It’s a good thing in a sense, because it’s another outlet to promote real ale, but it will affect other pubs in this area and that’s a problem,” he said.
