Herts Police is advising motorists of the dangers of freezing ice and snow across the county this evening.
A police spokesman said: “As the temperature looks set to drop tonight, the Constabulary is advising motorists of the potential dangers of freezing ice and snow.
“Side roads in particular could still be difficult to negotiate as thawing snow turns to ice.
“Unsalted pavements may also be dangerous.”
Superintendent Richard Liversidge, who is based within the Force’s control room, added: “Hertfordshire is in for some very cold weather in the next 24 hours and I would ask that everyone travelling around the county take some common some sense precautions.
“This includes ensuring you have adequate clothing and footwear for the harsh weather conditions.
“The temperature could drop to -4 °C which could lead to black ice on roads and pavements.
“Please take care and allow extra time for your journey.
“Indeed, if your journey isn’t important then consider making it later in the week when forecasters say the weather will improve.”
Highways England will be working around the clock this evening and into the early hours to treat its motorways and major A-roads and keep them free from disruption.
Highways England’s National Winter and Severe Weather Team Leader, Paul Furlong, said: “We will be working around the clock to keep our roads open and free from disruption.
“Drivers are encouraged to drive to the conditions and reduce their speed as appropriate and should plan their journeys, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel as well as any essentials such as medication.”
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the region.
For this evening and tonight, The Met Office states: “Cloud and wintry outbreaks gradually becoming confined to the east, and breezy here.
“Clearer skies in the far west with lighter winds, allowing temperatures to fall sharply with a locally severe frost over lying snow, and icy conditions.
“Minimum temperature -6 °C.”
Tuesday, again, is likely to be cloudy with wintry showers and a maximum temperature 2 °C.
Rain is forecast for Wednesday, when it is predicted to be less cold.
