Boro defender eyes Oldham scalp as Stevenage look for first League 1 win since Valentine’s Day

Scott Laird says Stevenage need to put together a winning run of games to put pressure on their play-off rivals.

Boro have not won in the league since they beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on Valentine’s Day, and this evening (Tuesday) host an inconsistent Oldham Athletic side at the Lamex Stadium.

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Chesterfield, during which Laird scored his seventh league goal of the season, the Boro defender said Stevenage need to make the most of their home advantage between now and the end of the season if they are to realise their dreams of reaching the League 1 play-off places.

“It’s important to put a winning run together,” Laird said. “Win, win, win on the form table is a big thing and it puts pressure on people around you and with 13 games to go now, still eight of them at home, it’s a big opportunity for us to press home our home advantage and put three points on the board.

“We are riding high but [the draw against Chesterfield] was after the Lord Mayor’s Show a little bit after Wednesday [when Stevenage lost to Spurs in the FA Cup].

“We shouldn’t have let that affect us but it did for the first half-hour and then we put ourselves in a hole and we managed to get out of it and we can’t afford to do that any more. We need to be ruthless with ourselves and ruthless with opponents.

“We have got to start strong; we’ve got to start fast like we have been doing. I think we’ve let ourselves the last couple of weeks and results have shown that.”
